However, the only receipts we'd save are those that were actually printed out from the register. We keep all our paper stuff (bills and repair orders, register receipts, etc) for I think 7 years, as per NY state law, and in theory it's sorted by date and shift. I don't remember for certain the exact time frame, because I've almost never had to reprint a receipt from more than a day ago, and even that's pretty rare (it does happen though, so you're not the only person in the world who's ever requested an old receipt). IIRC, our registers keep receipt records going back longer than a week, but it's incredibly time-consuming and difficult, and the cashier(s) on duty might not even know how, to track down a single transaction out of thousands of transactions per day unless you have some good search parameters - ie if you remember what time the transaction occurred, which pump you were on, the exact amount of the transaction, so on and so forth. What is the next best step? How does an average person go about getting a record like this? Now, I know that not getting a receipt is my fault, but something smells fishy here. The manager of the gas station stated that they only keep those records for 8 days. I asked about other records, even without a receipt-receipt I don't care whether it comes out of the little printer or not, surely there's a log of which pumps put out which fuel. The gas station says that they can only provide receipts going back one week. So, surely I can get a replacement receipt or record from the gas station, right? Since borrowing my dad's truck, I am continually struck with (a) how much trucks suck gas, and (b) how awkward it is to select a "grade" of fuel again.
The dealership called me today to inform me that there is gasoline in the tank, that the tank must be siphoned and "many parts" replaced for an estimated $3,000 that will not be covered by the warranty (obviously). I had it towed to the dealership as it's under warranty for these sorts of things. Not knowing anything about cars, I freaked out, turned around and drove home. Two miles into our trip, my check engine light came on. I swiped my card at the pump, filled my tank to the top, I declined a receipt because I didn't want another piece of paper in my wallet for the duration of my vacation, and away we. I drive a diesel Volkswagen and always be extra careful to put diesel in the car.
